Dear Parents,
Part of your child's evening homework is to read for 20 minutes. I want to thank the many parents who take the time each night to ensure that their children reads and to sign the reading log. Your partnership in furthering your child's reading skills is truly appreciated.
Your child should be asking you for a signature each night to show that he/she has read the required 20 minutes (Saturday and Sunday as well). If this is not turned in on Fridays, this assignment is marked as a zero. More importantly, your child has not cultivated a love of reading that is so important to their future success in and out of school.

I have posted extensive research on my site to show how important it is that your child reads every night. Just as a professional athlete only gets better through practice, readers improve their craft only through reading! I can and do provide your child with engaging reading lessons utilizing high quality literature every day, however, I cannot get your child reading on grade-level alone - I need your help.
These are two examples of data that show how important it is that your child reads each and every day:
Child A: Reads for at least 40 minutes each night (beyond the required 20): DIBELS score: 160 WPM
Child B: Has not turned in a reading log once this year: DIBELS score: 43 WPM.
Note: Children in third grade should start the year reading 70 WPM.

If your child does not turn in a reading log to show that he/she is reading every night, I have told them that they will have to make up this reading during their activities. If they are to be successful on the MCAS in March, they have to be able to read it.
