Thank you to those parents who attended the Commissioner of Education's roundtable discussion Thursday night. As you know, the commissioner is to decide whether or not to allow the Holland to remain in level 4 status, or to designate our school as a level five. We should be hearing his decision within a couple of weeks. It is important that you remain involved in the discussions that follow.
The students and I have made some changes to our behavior system. There are MANY off task behaviors going on in our classroom every day. These behaviors - talking out, talking with friends, walking around the classroom, fooling around, throwing items, arguing, etc. - take away from valuable learning time. We decided as a class that we will add two additional categories to our stoplight system:
Star: If your child has remained on GREEN all day, and has also made an extra effort in school that day, a star will be placed in their chart pocket for the day. They will take the star home to let you know that they were acting like a SUPERSTAR that day.
Purple: We will add a category below RED (parent letter) to indicate the children that are continuing to misbehave even after four other cards were flipped. Purple will indicate that they will lose a recess or activity and will do copy work during that period. They will also be calling mom or dad during that time to let you know what they have been doing and to schedule a meeting.
Additionally, I will be allowing students who are on YELLOW or ORANGE to move their card up to GREEN if they turn their day around. Students on RED or PURPLE cannot move up.
Please let me know if you have any questions. ~ Mrs. Mark
